Especially these days, every choice an entrepreneur, business leader, or homeowner makes can be the difference between success and failure.  Making the best possible choices is vital, whether it involves a stock portfolio or retirement plan, a household budget, or the future of a large corporation.

Fortunately, successful decision making is a skill that can be learned. Every day I teach it to people just like you at Make Your Business Boom, a unique hybrid that combines consulting and coaching with cutting edge concepts derived from psychological research.  The synergy of this innovative approach is proven by the practical and effective way it motivates business owners and others to transform them into better decision makers.

Decision making is a complex process that requires time and training if a person wants to be empowered to make the best possible decisions in virtually any situation. But making choices is typically done from force of habit, as the mind accepts the easiest, most convenient, or most obvious option.  Since poor decisions can cut off access to more desirable options and alternatives, it is important to train the mind to default to superior decisions and choices.

In a recent teleseminar I outlined four steps to quickly train anyone and help them start making better decisions automatically:

  • First, track any conscious decisions you make throughout the day, whether they are choices on a restaurant menu or decisions about what to wear to work.  Get in the habit of noticing how many small decisions you make during the course of a day.
  • Next, take conscious control of every decision you make within a 48-hour timeframe, including those that you normally make unconsciously.  With a little practice it becomes possible to recognize choices and options each time you make a decision.
  • Create a written outline of your goals and dreams.  For two days base every single decision on whether it helps you achieve those goals, trying to imagine how even the smallest decisions impact your future. Watch as the decision making process begins to improve and have a more dynamic, positive, and intentional impact on your life.
  • The last step is to begin keeping a journal of successful choices and healthy decisions.  Every day write down at least three success stories – for example sticking to a diet or exercise plan, landing a lucrative account, or improving a personal relationship.

Decisions drive action and yield results.  Indecision creates a state of paralysis, whereas successful decisions breed proactive success.  Learning how to make better and more conscious choices and then tracking and documenting daily victories – however small they may be – can transform anyone.  Over time better decisions breed grand success in every aspect of one’s life – both personally and professionally.
